Stel dat je een e-mail ontvangt van een advocaat uit Zuid-Afrika die een zaak aan het voorbereiden waarvoor een Nederlands document, te weten een 'Mededeling van scheiding in verband met verdeling van ouderdomspensioen' met spoed moet worden vertaald in het Engels.

Dit gebeurde ons onlangs. Dit kwam omdat een relatie van ons die in Zuid-Afrika woont, ons had aangeraden aan de betreffende advocaat. De vraag kwam binnen op 23 april en de beëdigde vertaling diende uiterlijk op 2 mei fysiek bij de advocaat te zijn.

Dat betekende dat we niet alleen onder druk zouden moeten werken -wat we wel gewend zijn-, maar ook dat we zouden moeten uitvinden welke koerier in staat zou zijn om het document binnen no-time in Zuid-Afrika te krijgen. Na enig zoekwerk bleek DHL de juiste partner voor deze klus. Het document zou op 29 april worden opgehaald en op 2 mei vóór 12 uur 's middags worden afgeleverd bij de advocaat.

Na akkoord van de klant zijn we aan de slag gegaan. Ik heb de vertaling gemaakt, en mijn collega heeft de beëdiging gedaan; een slager keurt tenslotte niet zijn eigen vlees. Zo'n beëdigde vertaling maken wordt daarmee ook een feestje, want het levert altijd mooie discussies op over terminologie. Een voorbeeld hiervan in deze casus was de term 'huwelijkse voorwaarden'. De meeste mensen kennen huwelijkse voorwaarden van de sluiting van het huwelijk: je trouwt in gemeenschap van goederen of onder huwelijkse voorwaarden. Dit betekent dat deze voorwaarden vóór het huwelijk worden opgesteld. Maar het is ook mogelijk om huwelijkse voorwaarden op te stellen tijdens het huwelijk. Daardoor volstond het niet om 'huwelijkse voorwaarden' te vertalen als Prenuptial agreement, en hebben we de term vertaald als Prenuptial and/or postnuptial agreement.

De vertaling was klaar op woensdag, en de beëdigde vertaling op donderdagavond. Op vrijdagmorgen heeft de collega de beëdigde vertaling laten inbinden met de brontekst, en om iets over enen in de middag stond de koerier voor de deur om het document op te halen.

En toen hadden we het document uit handen gegeven en moesten we ook de controle uit handen geven, en afwachten of DHL er daadwerkelijk in zou slagen om het pakketje op tijd af te leveren in Zuid-Afrika. En dat is gelukt. Iets na enen op 2 mei kreeg ik het seintje van de advocaat dat het document was afgeleverd.

I love it when a plan comes together. Klant tevreden, wij tevreden. Vakwerk leveren en opleveren op het moment dat het nodig is.

Suppose you receive an email from a lawyer from South Africa who is preparing a case for which a Dutch document, namely a 'Notice of separation in connection with division of old-age pension' urgently needs to be translated into English.

This happened to us recently. This was because a relation of ours living in South Africa had recommended us to the lawyer in question. The request came in on 23 April and the certified translation had to be physically with the lawyer by 2 May.

This meant that not only would we have to work under pressure -which we are used to-, but we would also have to find out which courier would be able to get the document to South Africa in no time. After some searching, DHL turned out to be the right partner for the job. The document would be collected on 29 April and delivered to the lawyer by noon on 2 May.

After the client's agreement, we got to work. I did the translation, and my colleague did the swearing-in; after all, a butcher does not inspect his own meat. Doing a sworn translation like this also makes it a party, because it always results in great discussions about terminology. An example of this in this case was the term 'prenuptial agreement'. Most people know prenuptial agreements from the conclusion of the marriage: you marry in community of property or under prenuptial agreements. This means that these conditions are drawn up before the marriage. But it is also possible to draw up prenuptial agreements during the marriage. As a result, it was not sufficient to simply translate ‘huwelijkse voorwaarden’ as Prenuptial agreement, and we translated the term as Prenuptial and/or postnuptial agreement.

The translation was ready on Wednesday, and the affidavit translation on Thursday evening. On Friday morning, the colleague had the certified translation bound with the source text, and at a little past one in the afternoon, the courier was at the door to collect the document.

And then we had handed over the document and also had to hand over control, and wait and see if DHL would actually manage to deliver the parcel to South Africa on time. And they did. A little after one o’ clock on 2 May, I got the signal from the lawyer that the document had been delivered.

I love it when a plan comes together. the Customer was satisfied, and so we were satisfied. Delivering craftsmanship and delivering it when it's needed.
