Are you curious about the vision of colleagues on dilemmas you struggle with in your work?

Especially for lawyers, FOCUS Translation Agency is organising a new series of (online) peer-to-peer consultation sessions in 2025.

Discussing and reflecting with fellow professionals

Every lawyer has to deal with dilemmas in their work. How do you handle them? How does it affect you? It can be of added value to exchange ideas about this with fellow lawyers. Being unabashedly asked questions out of curiosity, challenging each other to look at things from a different perspective, gaining new insights and thus generating ideas to tackle the dilemma. That is what peer-to-peer consultation is all about!

Small-scale peer-to-peer consultation sessions

FOCUS Translation Agency has been organising supervised peer-to-peer consultation since 2010, which deals with personal challenges that are topical for the participants.

From January 2025, FOCUS Translation Agency is once again organising supervised peer-to-peer consultation for lawyers.

The dates have been set. You will find the form to register for a group on the right. You will then participate in peer supervision with a designated group of lawyers four times (two hours per meeting, eight hours in total).

The group size is 6-10 participants and the peer-to-peer consultation meetings take place in the evenings. At a location that is convenient for you, because the meetings are online.

Why choose peer-to-peer consultation?

As you may know, the Dutch Bar Association has made peer review mandatory for all lawyers. Every year, each lawyer must participate in at least 8 hours of some form of structured feedback. This can be done through peer review and structured intercollegiate consultation, but also through peer review. You can apply for PE points for your participation in peer-to-peer consultation under Article 4.4 of the Regulation and Article 14 of the Legal Profession Regulations, because peer-to-peer consultation is considered a training activity worth points.

However, the supervised peer consultation via FOCUS Translation Agency offers more than just training credits – it also provides personal and professional growth, because we deal with the dilemmas you experience in your profession. We do not discuss case studies, but rather the dilemmas that a case study entails for you. Being able to discuss issues you struggle with in your work in a group of like-minded people, and then openly discussing these issues under professional guidance, especially with colleagues who do not work in your own practice, will deepen your practice.

Surprisingly, the well-supported online meetings of FOCUS Translation Agency are very effective and pleasant to follow. This is ensured by the supervisors from FOCUS Translation Agency. They are experienced supervisors who provide a safe setting in which one or two dilemmas of the participating lawyers are methodically addressed, without them interfering with the subject matter.

Peer-to-peer consultation is even more effective if you do a series of at least four sessions per year with the same group. You get to know each other, you become proficient in doing peer-to-peer consultation together, you can go into more depth more easily, and therefore learn more.

Preparation
During the peer-to-peer consultation session, we will work on current dilemmas that the participants experience in their work situation. The peer-to-peer consultation supervisor expects all participants to each bring in a current dilemma each time. In preparation for each meeting, we therefore ask you to think about a dilemma that you are currently experiencing in your work that you can bring up during the session. It is no use bringing up a dilemma that you have already resolved, as there is no longer any current learning experience in doing that.

Peer-to-Peer Consultation Methods
There are many different peer-to-peer consultation methods in use. FOCUS' Peer-to-Peer Consultation Treasure Chest contains 25 methods. During the first meeting, the peer-to-peer consultation supervisor will explain the three most commonly used methods to the participants, and a method is chosen to start with. The supervisor will first explain all the steps of the method that is being used and then lead the group through the procedure.

Certificate of participation

If you participate in the group, you will receive a (digital) certificate of participation immediately after the last meeting. If you participate in an individual meeting, you will receive a (digital) certificate of participation immediately after the meeting. You can use this certificate to register your PE points.
